Earth Day is My Birthday: Why this day means so much to me

Every year on April 22 is Earth Day. A day that for as long as I can remember was dedicated to doing something nice for our Planet Earth. I distinctly remember the day I went to school on my 8th birthday in a cute outfit and thinking, “Why do I have to be the one to pick up trash on my birthday?” Mind you it was the entire school picking up trash, but I remember thinking this is so unfair!
But now that I’m older, and I have deepened my connection with nature, I get it now. I’m actually so thankful my school taught us the importance of taking care of our planet from a young age. Earth Day is about taking a moment to reflect on our connection to the planet, the choices we make, and the legacy we leave behind.
Maybe it’s no coincidence that I was born on Earth Day. I’ve always felt a deep sense of connection to nature. Whether I’m walking barefoot in the grass, swimming in the ocean, or simply breathing in the salty air at the beach. There’s something about being outdoors that brings me back to myself. It grounds me. It reminds me what truly matters.
As I step into a new decade (can’t believe it, 30 here I come!), I find myself more committed than ever to living in alignment with my values—and caring for the Earth is at the heart of that. But you don’t have to be born on Earth Day to start creating meaningful shifts in how you show up for the planet.
How to Honor the Earth This Earth Day
If you’re ready to live a little more eco-consciously without the overwhelm here are a few intentional ways to celebrate Earth Day (and every day):
1. Start Small and Intentional
Swap plastic bags for reusable ones. Bring a reusable water bottle. Buy in bulk when you can. Small shifts, when done consistently, create a ripple effect.

2. Choose with Care
Be mindful of the brands you support. Look for sustainable, ethical options when shopping. Every purchase is a vote for the kind of world you want to live in.
3. Get Outside and Connect
Take a walk. Hug a tree. Watch the sunset. The more connected we feel to the Earth, the more naturally we want to protect it.
4. Reduce, Reuse, and Relearn
Before buying something new, pause. Ask if you can repurpose what you already have. Revisit what sustainability means to you—and give yourself grace as you grow.
5. Share Your Journey
Your voice matters. Share what you’re learning, what you’re loving, and how you’re changing. You never know who you might inspire just by being yourself.
A Personal Promise
This year, I’m celebrating Earth Day by recommitting to my path: living slower, more intentionally, and more sustainably. I don’t have it all figured out, but I believe in progress over perfection, and that our collective care has the power to create real change.
Whether you’re new to sustainable living or deep into your journey, I hope today reminds you that every small act of love for the Earth matters. This planet is our home and caring for it is the most beautiful kind of birthday gift we can give.
